WEBSTER CITY, Iowa -- As Representative Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri tries to boost his presidential campaign in Iowa with the support of local labor unions, Senator John F. Kerry will strike back this week with a hometown weapon: Representative Stephen F. Lynch, Democrat of South Boston.
The former ironworker and labor lawyer will seek to aid Kerry's presidential bid by appearing Saturday and Sunday at several Iowa labor events. On Saturday, they include a United Auto Workers picnic in Marshalltown. On Sunday, Lynch will campaign for Kerry at a Scott County labor picnic.
It will represent the first campaigning in Iowa on Kerry's behalf by a member of the Massachusetts congressional delegation.
Lynch said of Kerry last night in a telephone interview: "I think that he's got a very strong labor voting record, and I think that should be a comfort to organized labor, that John will be there.
"I think, as well, labor needs to think about which candidate has the best chance of winning here. . . . If labor can get behind John the way I know they can, I think he has a very good chance of beating President Bush."
Before speaking last night to a group of Democrats in Hamilton County, Kerry said he appreciated the homestate assistance.
"Steve's credentials with labor are as strong as anybody, but I think he's a basic Democrat, he's a meat-and-potatoes Democrat like all of us in Massachusetts, and I think it will help communicate to people here the kinds of things that we're going to fight for and are fighting for," the senator said.
Stephen Lynch is a strong spokesman for John Kerry! I love his statement: "meat-and-potatoes Democrat like all of us in Massachusetts"! So very, true. Massachusetts people are very meat-and-potatoes, honest and up-front! We take that with us where ever we go! Just last night I was talking to my daughter's english teacher, who like me is a from Massachusetts. When I asked if he was supporting Kerry, he replied, "of course, he's our hometown man!" "John is awesome, he spoke at my college graduation!", he said."
I have recently seen a huge influx of Kerry supporters around my area here in Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley! We're planning to get out to local events and do some campaigning here for John! I'd love to hear what others are doing in their local area.
