John Kerry was in San Diego today speaking about skyrocketing gasoline prices. We know a bit about this subject here in Southern California where gasoline prices in Los Angeles County are averaging between $2.09 and $2.69 per gallon!

"This administration has done nothing with OPEC to reduce the gas prices," Kerry said during a rally at the University of California, San Diego. The city has the nation's highest average gas prices at $2.12 a gallon.

Kerry also called on Bush to halt filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserves, which some Democrats contend drives up the cost of fuel for U.S. consumers in an already tight market with record prices. Wilson’s story began when Vice President Dick Cheney sent him to Niger to investigate a claim of Uranium being shipped to Iraq. Wilson determined the claim was unfounded, but the President’s State of the Union speech before the war included it anyway. After Wilson publicly criticized the speech, the White House retaliated, and a federal grand jury is now trying to determine who in the administration leaked his wife’s identity to reporters and whether the case warrants criminal charges.

Kerry Looks to Raise $20M in Six Weeks

John Kerry is focusing on raising the tens of millions of Democratic dollars he no longer must split with his rivals for the nomination while President Bush, sitting atop $170 million in donations, is turning his attention to bringing in money for the GOP and congressional candidates.

"We are focused on raising what we need to compete," Meehan said. He noted Bush's record campaign fund raising, which so far stands at more than $170 million, compared to at least $60 million for Kerry.

Kerry hopes to raise $20 million for himself in 20 cities during the next six weeks, starting Monday with a luncheon at the Sacramento home of developer Eleni Tsakopoulos-Kounalakis and her husband, Markos Kounalakis, president and publisher of The Washington Monthly. The event raised $250,000 to $300,000.

Kerry raised about $3 million Monday night at a fund-raiser in San Francisco with 1,000 donors, according to Kerry's California finance co-chairman John Roos. Kerry also had fund-raisers planned Tuesday in San Diego and Los Angeles.

Kerry's fresh push for money comes as the DNC tries to narrow the Republican National Committee's multimillion-dollar cash advantage. Through last month, the DNC had raised about $56 million, compared to nearly $139 million for the RNC.

Richard Clarke: CIA warnings were not heeded by the administration.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush's former counterterrorism chief testified Wednesday that the administration did not consider terrorism an urgent priority before the September 11, 2001 attacks, despite his repeated warnings about Osama bin Laden's terror network.

"I believe the Bush administration in the first eight months considered terrorism an important issue, but not an urgent issue," Richard Clarke told a commission investigating the September 11 attacks.

Clarke has ignited a firestorm with his assertions that the Bush administration failed to recognize pending terror attacks against the United States and that the president focused too much on Iraq after September 11 -- charges the White House has vigorously disputed.

Democrats dispute

Kerry was in Idaho, taking a five-day break from campaigning . His campaign spokesman issued a statement calling the Bush speech misleading.

"John Kerry has fought for middle-class tax relief and has proposed new middle-class tax cuts in this campaign," said David Wade.

"The president is on thin ice talking taxes when his economic meltdown and record deficits have forced so many states to raise the middle-class tax burden.

..."I wish the president would spend some more time in Central Florida and speak to people other than his most loyal supporters, because he needs to hear that his misguided policies are hurting people," Graham's statement said. "In greater Orlando alone, the unemployment rate has shot from 2.5 percent in December 2000 to 4.4 percent in January 2004. That's a loss of more than 40,000 jobs.

"President Bush's economic policies have failed Florida," said Rep. Kendrick Meek of Florida, Kerry's state campaign chairman. "His corporate buddies have shipped 70,000 Floridian manufacturing jobs overseas, and now it's time for Mr. Bush to get the pink slip."

Today John Kerry completed a three-hour trek up and down a mountain in Sawtooth National Recreation Area in Ketchum, Idaho. Kerry snowshoed up and snowboarded down from about a 2000-foot ridge.

Tim Cron, of the Sun Valley Ski Patrol, guided Kerry up the mountain on Friday and warned that conditions would be challenging.

Kerry set out up the slope with Cron, personal assistant Marvin Nicholson and three burly Secret Service agents. They picked their way to the top before skiing and snowboarding down.

A normal 10-minute descent turned into 45 minutes. Nearly everyone tumbled repeatedly and often stopped to catch a breath. Even the agents struggled, and a couple gave up and donned snowshoes for the final stretch.

After getting off the slope, Kerry put on snowshoes for a 200-yard trek across flat ground. Even with his snowshoes, he often sank up to his thighs. He was clearly fatigued as he reached the bottom of the mountain.

"It's a great workout," Kerry said. "The view up there was spectacular."

9/11 families make their voices heard

Some families of September 11 victims are objecting to Bush-Cheney 2004 ads that use images from the attacks in New York City.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- This week, a new pressure group demonstrated its clout -- and got the White House to change its position.

That's a pretty impressive political Play of the Week.

Last week, some family members of victims from the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks expressed anger over the president's use of 9/11 footage in a campaign ad.

"We're saying, find some other way to run a campaign without stepping on the bodies of our dead," said Rita Lasar, who lost her brother in the terrorist attacks.

WASHINGTON - John Kerry locked up the Democratic presidential nomination Saturday, eclipsing the magic number of delegates needed to become President Bush's chief rival in the general election, according to an Associated Press tally.

The four-term Massachusetts senator reached the 2,162 delegate mark Saturday afternoon, the AP count found, just as Democrats in Kansas headed to party caucuses.

Amassing the required number of delegates was a mere formality for Kerry after his last main Democratic rival, John Edwards, dropped out of the campaign following a disastrous showing on March 2, when 10 states held "Super Tuesday" contests.

Kerry hit the magic number early Saturday afternoon thanks to support from "superdelegates" — people who get a vote at the Democratic convention in Boston by virtue of their influence within the party.

Kerry had 2,000 delegates following his commanding wins in primaries in four Southern states last week. He picked up the last 162 needed through superdelegate endorsements or pledges to vote for him at the convention.

The AP count is based on state and party rules, analysis of election results, and interviews with superdelegates. Superdelegate support was counted only if someone could be contacted, either personally or through a representative.

A note about some politicaly themed entertainment from Oscar winner Tim Robbins:

When did you first come up with the idea for “Embedded”?
During the war, I was reading different news sources. I would check everything. It’s the way to get a balance. And I was reading a different account of the war in the U.K. papers and that was for me, curious. I started making notes. I started by writing the scenes with the Office of Special Plans folks—the neo-conservatives—just as an exercise. I wondered what skewed logic was it to use deception and lies to get the American public’s support for the war?

You’re talking about President Bush’s advisors like Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his deputy, Paul Wolfowitz.
Yeah, I did some research on them and I found out about some of the philosophy they adhere to—a kind of elitist philosophy that there are different truths for different people. The idea of the noble lie—that concept exists in the philosophies of some of these people. So I just started writing these characters and that’s kind of where the play started. Then I thought, this is fun to write but there is another story here, and that’s the soldiers who are serving the country.

The war planners are shown in masks and suits, plotting the war from what appears to be an office.
For me, this war is hard to stomach mainly because the people, the policy makers that have put these men and women in danger, all had the opportunity when they were young men to serve in Vietnam. Most of them chose not to, [they] sought deferments or avoided service altogether. Not only did they not serve but their children don’t have to, and yet they see no problem with this kind of policy of pre-emptive war.

You make them sound a little heartless.
I wanted to try to understand what motivates this kind of policy. There is what I feel is a misguided benevolence. I do believe they [Bush’s advisors] think they are doing a good thing for the world. It’s just curious to me that the rest of the world doesn’t seem to get it. Even our long time allies are not looking at us with a mixture of suspicion and fear.

Why did you call the play “Embedded”?
I just like the word. It’s a great word.

From the depiction of the media coverage in the play, it doesn’t seem like you were a real fan of the embedded journalist program.
Actually, there was some really good reporting from embedded journalists. There are two sympathetic types in the play, two cheerleader types and one in the middle. There’s one embedded reporter who is a model for how one can ‘get things through.’ As she says, ‘You just have to be clever.’

What message are you hoping to get across to the audience?
I hope that people leave the theater in some kind of discussion. That would be my ideal. Whether they agree or not, I don’t care. I hope they address some of the questions raised in the play.

Have you gotten any backlash from supporters of the war?
There have been a couple people who’ve been pissed off. Listen, it’s a satire. And you can’t be polite in a satire. It’s also not a documentary, so people can take what they want to out of it. Just come on down and see it and have an open mind. I’d like people to see it and judge for themselves what the play is about.

Kerry's chance encounter leads to conversation about Irish Peace Talks:


On Friday, Kerry spent the day running errands and shopping in Boston, where he bought more than $150 in books from a local book store and had a chance encounter with Martin McGuinness, a leader of the Irish group Sinn Fein.

McGuinness gave Kerry an upbeat report on the status of the stalled Irish peace talks.

“We’re tremendously far along in the peace process,” McGuinness said. “Where we are is a far better place than where we were 10 years ago.”

Al Franken is baiting the conservatives again, and this time he's bringing along friends to back him up...

Franken will be joined by fellow TV comedian Janeane Garofalo, both of whom will have co-hosts for their live three-hour shows. Other shows will be hosted by Randi Rhodes, a radio personality from southern Florida, and Lizz Winstead, a co-creater of "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central.

"Bush is going down in November," Franken said. "We're not ceding this territory any more. To their credit, the right wing has captured radio. We're going after them, and we're going after them hard."

The backers of Air America announced their programming lineup on Wednesday and said they planned to launch the network on March 31 in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco.

Mark Walsh, the CEO of Progress Media Inc., the company backing the network, said they have yet to sign any firm deals with advertisers but that several nonprofit organizations and progressive groups have promised to advertise.

He said the company hoped to raise "upward of $30 million" by the time the network goes live, which would allow them to operate for about 2 years before turning a profit. He declined to say how much they had raised so far, but he said "we are well on our way" to reaching the goal.

Walsh acknowledged that the starting base for the network was small, though positioned in key markets. "We don't expect to get giant numbers right away. This is one brick at a time."

Kerry Won't Back Down:

Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry on Thursday rejected demands that he apologize for calling his critics in the Republican Party "the most crooked, you know, lying group I've ever seen."

As Republican congressional leaders criticized Kerry's proposals and called for him to stop name-calling and negative campaigning, Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., said they see Kerry as "Ted Kennedy on a South Beach diet."

"I have no intention whatsoever of apologizing for my remarks," Kerry said during a news conference on the Senate side of the Capitol. "I think the Republicans need to start talking about the real issues before the country."

"There is a Republican attack squad that specializes in trying to destroy people and be negative," he said. "I haven't said anything that's incorrect about them. They've said a lot of things that are incorrect."

DeLay said Democrats "haven't produced anything but hate and that's what is disturbing."

Kerry dismissed their criticism of his remark as an effort to take attention away from Bush administration policies. "They can't talk about those things because George Bush doesn't have a record to run on, he has a record to run away from. And that's what they're trying to do," Kerry said.

In Chicago, Kerry told a supporter who had urged him to take on Bush: "Let me tell you, we've just begun to fight. We're going to keep pounding. These guys are the most crooked, you know, lying group I've ever seen. It's scary."



It appears to me there is a double standard being played by the Republicans, it's not okay for John Kerry to speak up about his opinions of some Republicans, yet Rep. Jack Kingston and Tom DeLay can make snide comments about Kerry...

The $900 billion number in the Bush ad is completely made up and shows that George Bush is running a campaign of deception and distortion.

While George Bush turns a blind eye to the spiraling health care costs facing the American people, John Kerry has proposed a plan to make health care more affordable and available for all American families. One third of the cost of this plan is a TAX CUT, nearly another third is straight relief from the cost of health care up to $1,000 per family, and the final third spends resources on those that need help most – such as our children.

Even when it was not always popular in the Democratic primaries, John Kerry made it clear that he supported maintaining hundreds of billions of tax cuts for working families making under $200,000. This ad is completely designed to deceive Americans.

Do Americans want a change?

In a poll conducted for The Associated Press by Ipsos-Public Affairs, 60 percent of Americans said the country is on the wrong track — a nightmarish number for an incumbent.

John Kerry declared in Bush's own backyard today, “Houston, we’ve got a problem.”

At a town hall meeting at the Houston Community College, John Kerry blasted Bush saying that he had produced a “barrel of broken promises” on jobs, health care and the federal budget.

Kerry called the president “a walking contradiction” who also failed to make good on vows to change the tone in Washington.

“About the only promise we can expect George W. Bush to keep this time around is his pledge of steady leadership,” said Kerry. “He has no problem campaigning on the same failed economic policies that have steadily led America into economic decline.”

John Kerry cemented the Democratic presidential nomination, driving rival John Edwards from the race with a string of Super Tuesday triumphs that catapulted the Massachusetts senator into an eight-month struggle to oust President Bush.

"Change is coming to America," Kerry said, capping a remarkable comeback that began this year with his candidacy on the brink of extinction in Iowa and New Hampshire. ...


"I am a fighter, and for more than 30 years I have been on the battle lines, on the front lines, for fairness and mainstream American values," Kerry told cheering supporters in Washington, D.C., promising to close tax loopholes, offer new incentives for manufacturers, protect the environment, raise the minimum wage and cut health care costs.

The crowd shouted along with him as Kerry delivered his signature line: "If George Bush wants to make national security the central issue of 2004, I have three words that I know he understands — Bring. It. On."

WHY WE NEED TO ELECT KERRY AND GET RID OF BUSH

Oh, and make sure you vote out any Republican Senators and Representatives you have too!

7 Principles of a Good Republican:

1. Always favor the super-rich. No matter what you do, always favor the interests of the extremely rich. They are your major campaign bribers (financers).

2. Politics is a game. You must play to win, at all costs. No matter who you have to lie to or steal from (except the rich: always follow Principle 1).

3. Cut taxes and increase corporate welfare for the inheriting rich. Even if the poor and the middle class have to pay more. Hey, you're not getting very many campaign bribes (contributions) from THEM!

4. As you take more money from the middle class and the poor, their wealth will go down and you won't be able to get as much from them. Borrow the difference.

5. Don't worry about bankrupting the country. If the nation falls apart, the rich can always move to Switzerland or Grand Cayman. Heck, most of their money's hidden there already!

6. Claim to be the Freedom Party and to be against taxes. This will keep the middle class and the poor from seeing how much they have to pay in HIDDEN TAXES...the higher inflation, unemployment and interest rates that result from massive deficit borrowing for the rich.

7. Ban personal freedom in people's bedrooms. This will keep SOME of the moralists and religious groups from seeing how much lying and stealing you're doing!
