354 Authors and Illustrators Support John Kerry

Children’s Authors, Illustrators Launch Pro-Kerry Ad Campaign
350 national authors swamp Web site

LOS ANGELES—More than 350 published children’s book authors and illustrators – including Judy Blume (recipient of the 2004 National Book Award for Contributions to American Letters) and Maurice Sendak – are joining forces to place ads in swing states in support of John Kerry, according to coordinators of Authors & Illustrators for Children.

“Award-winning authors and illustrators have swamped our Web site,” said Bruce Balan, co-founder of Authors & Illustrators for Children, a Los Angeles–based group.

Balan said the activist group has launched a national campaign to place media ads in teacher publications across the country, including the October issue of Teacher Magazine—read by over one million teachers.

The print ads, with a child’s face behind hundreds of author and illustrator names, are headlined “We Create Children’s Books Because We Care About Children—That’s Why We’re Voting For John Kerry.”
