John Kerry campaign goes after a winner
Contest offers a day with the candidate

'No purchase necessary to play," read the rules. "Void where prohibited."
Another prize-packed promotion for a soft drink or an action movie? Not exactly.
It's a contest to spend a day with Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry.
In the crowded 2004 Democratic presidential nomination race, candidates are testing new ways to drum up attention and draw people to their Web sites.
Bumper stickers and buttons are so 20th Century. Now campaigns must connect with potential voters through blogs and live online chats.
The Kerry campaign site is going a step further. It's offering a day with the candidate, an idea more associated with pop stars than White House hopefuls.
Kerry campaign spokesman Robert Gibbs describes it as a catchy way to reach out to supporters and increase the campaign's e-mail list.
"It's fairly unique," says Gibbs. "Whoever wins is going to have a fun time on the campaign trail with John Kerry."
It's also an attempt to distinguish Kerry from the pack, according to University of Detroit-Mercy marketing professor Mike Bernacchi.
"Maybe the message is because the Democrats are in kind of a sweepstakes, Kerry is going to show them how it's done," says Bernacchi.
To enter, you have to complete an online registration form at www.JohnKerry.com
Mail-in entries are OK.
One winner will be chosen to hang out with Kerry for a day in Iowa or New Hampshire. The package includes round-trip transportation, accommodations and food.
And not the dreaded campaign menu, either. "We can promise you it won't be the rubber chicken buffet," says Gibbs.
Oh, and one more thing. Participants must be registered voters.
Not to mention C-Span junkies.
