Media Matters For America Top 10 Media Failings of 2004, Conservative Misinformation Skews National Debate by Distorting and Ignoring Facts

Media Matters for America (MMFA) today announced the Top Ten Media Failings of 2004, laying out the most irresponsible and misleading examples of conservative misinformation in the media during the 2004 presidential campaign. Distortions of fact and other failings of the media ranged from failing to adequately investigate and report on Iraq, Al Qaeda and weapons of mass destruction to failing to provide balanced coverage on key issues.

"From the wall-to-wall media coverage of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and their attacks on Senator John Kerry to the failure to thoroughly examine important documents such as the 9/11 report, Media Matters for America has documented how the fourth estate displayed an astounding lack of accountability and objectivity during the past six months." David Brock, President and CEO of Media Matters for America said today.

The following list represents the most severe failings of the media during the past six months:

1. Failures in covering Iraq, Al Qaeda, and WMD

2. The Swift Boat Veterans for Truth debacle

3. Double standards in coverage of flip-flops, Vietnam records

4. Lack of balance in media coverage

5. Media frequently described Kerry as not likable or trustworthy

6. Media repeated GOP spin that Kerry is weak and terrorists wanted him to win

7. Media coverage too often focused on trivial issues

8. Kerry, Edwards called first, fourth most liberal members of Senate

9. Insufficient coverage of 9-11 report and other major reports

10. Media drew false equivalencies between disparate actions statements

This hits upon important issues for the Democrats in the future. We must find a way to get past the right wing noise machine.

This occurs on two general levels. First there is the large amount of untrue attacks on Kerry, and untrue statements on his record or positions.

Secondly, there's the overall false impression the right gives of itself as of being the party of small government and the free market. So many people buy into this in characterizing the parties, but neither is true.

Well we need to keep fighting back against the media. No doubt about that.

It's not so much a matter of fighting back against the media as knowing how to present ourselves and how to respond to attacks.

Kerry said during the primaries that he would fight back, but he didn't succeed on this. Far too many people still believed all the lies--enought to result in his defeat. Who ever runs in 2008 will face the same type of attacks. We've seen this so many times already. We must come up with a better strategy to handle this.

I realize there is no easy answer, and I don't fault Kerry for failing to overcome these attacks. One problem is that if you deny an attack, the average person is more likely to come out of it becoming more aware of the attack but not necessarily the defense.

I posted this in the thread with the Daily Mirror cover, but in case people aren't looking at comments in lower threads any more I thought I should let people know about this here:

The Mirror's web site now has a full page copy of this cover available for download.

I think I'll put a framed copy of it up somewhere, along with the pictures taken of me with Teresa Kerry and Jennifer Granholm during the past year. (I took some great pictures of John Kerry at a small meeting, but didn't get the chance to have someone take a picture of me with him. )

I don't have to read this article to know what we are up against.

Even though I benefit more than most from Bushs's tax cuts, the culture wars is one reason I so strongly supported Kerry. Living in Western Michigan, I am on the front lines of the culture wars and see, in nearby cities, what life under the right would become.

(By the way, even though I do benefit from the tax cuts, unlike others who do I also look at the big picture. The stock market does better under Democrats, making my investment income higher despite higher capital gains taxes. A stronger middle class under the Democrats also means higher business income.)
