Yesterday in the Los Angeles area, three teenagers were shot when they were leaving Taft High School in Woodland Hills, Ca.
It is appalling to me that Dean can not see the need for tougher gun control laws.
SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT - GOVERNOR DEAN'S COMMENT ON GUN VIOLENCE WAS INACCURATE
The candidate said states like Tennessee with low homicide rates don't need strong gun laws.
In last night's Democratic Presidential primary debate in Baltimore, sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus, former Vermont Governor Howard Dean was inaccurate in his efforts to illustrate his longstanding argument that "we need to resist attempts to tell states how to deal with guns beyond existing federal law."
Governor Dean cited Tennessee as a state with a low homicide rate. He was incorrect. Tennessee has both overall high homicide rates and high gun homicide rates. Tennessee has the eighth highest homicide rate and the sixth highest gun homicide rate in the nation, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). 6.16 per 100,000 individuals living in Tennessee are murdered by firearms, whereas the national rate of firearm homicides is 3.92. In 2000, there were a total of 343 gun homicides in Tennessee.
9/10/03 - As the nation's largest national, non-partisan, grassroots organization leading the fight to prevent gun violence, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March is dedicated to creating an America free from gun violence, where all Americans are safe at home, at school, at work, and in their communities.
John Kerry on Gun Control -
Increased Gun Safety: John Kerry is deeply troubled by the numbers of people – and particularly the number of children – that are wounded or killed by gunfire each year. He supports measures that would prevent children and adults from misusing any of the approximately 192 million firearms currently in circulation in the nation. And he believes that we must enforce existing gun laws, close the gun show loophole, which permits sales at gun shows without a background check, and require that all handguns be sold with a child safety lock.
