Debatably, Clooney Turns Cameraman

Forget the presidential candidate. The most famous person at the Democratic debate at Morgan State University here tonight was wielding a Panasonic video mini-camera, shooting footage of the spectacle.

His name: George Clooney.

The actor was in town to promote "K Street," his upcoming HBO series about Washington politics. But he was pressed into service shooting some last-minute pictures for the show even though, he declared, "I'm the worst cameraman on my team."

Clooney said he is trying to get a feel for what happens behind the scenes in politics. "I'm really interested in seeing how the process works," he said. "Everyone is a little suspicious right now in Washington" of the HBO program. Why? "For the same reason I'm always suspicious," Clooney said, meaning that the capital's power brokers fear that they may be portrayed in a negative light. The actor has had his share of run-ins with the tabloid press.

Clooney seemed particularly fascinated by the role of the news media. "I grew up around it," he said. "My father was an anchorman for 30 years." He conceded that his celebrity "makes it hard to be a voyeur because you become part of the spectacle." He paused. "Maybe that will get old. I've had enough movies bomb."

Clooney was accompanied by Democratic spinmeister and CNN commentator James Carville and by Stuart Stevens, a GOP ad maker who was part of President Bush's 2000 campaign and is a consultant to "K Street." Clooney skillfully deflected questions about tonight's candidate debate, although he acknowledged: "I'm a Democrat. I'm a liberal. I grew up a liberal, I can't shake it."

A reporter interviewing Clooney said she thought the worst thing about politics these days was the cynicism. She stopped herself and declared: "That's off the record."

But Clooney, who had turned the camera on her, chortled: "Too late now!"

A note to George Clooney: Any thoughts on endorsing John Kerry...
