New Legislation Aimed at Helping Fishermen Hurt by Oil Spills
WASHINGTON -- A Senate committee passes legislation aimed at helping fishermen recover financial damages caused by oil spills like one in Buzzards Bay earlier this year.
Senator John Kerry added several provisions, including the loan option. Another change to the bill would require the Coast Guard to consider accelerating the requirement for companies to shift from single-hull to double-hull vessels.
The legislation comes three months after a barge owned by Bouchard Transportation spilled 98,000 gallons of heavy fuel oil into Buzzards Bay, forcing the region's shellfishing beds to close and soiling 53 miles of coastline. (AP News)
