Kerry confidently addressed criticism that he takes contradictory positions on issues by challenging host Tim Russert to ''ask me any question.'' Yet Kerry's tax argument invited fresh scrutiny and was likely to provide fodder for Republicans. While accusing Dean and Gephardt of supporting tax hikes by favoring a repeal of the Bush tax cuts, Kerry rebutted suggestions that he was supporting tax increases with his own call for repealing administration tax cuts that benefit those earning more than $200,000.
''If that's what you want to call it, fine,'' Kerry told Russert. ''If President Bush wants to go around this country saying, `I think people earning $200,000 a year ought to get a tax cut, and I don't think people ought to have health care, I don't think we ought to fund education,' that's a fight I look forward to,'' the senator said.
