Kerry Meeting with Campaign Aides
From: Dean May Step Up Campaign Plans
By Glen Johnson, Boston Globe Staff, 7/8/2003

''It's really nothing,'' Kerry said yesterday after he and his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, returned from a post-lunch walk to their home overlooking the entrance to Nantucket Harbor. ''This is just the first chance I've had to get everyone together and talk about where we are, where we're going.''

Kerry aides were quick to say they had scheduled the meeting well before Dean's money total was released last week, but conceded the recent news added an item to the discussion agenda.

''Was I surprised by his numbers? Were you?'' said a top Kerry aide, speaking on condition of anonymity. ''We just have to keep our eye on the ball.''

Among those attending the session were Kerry campaign manager Jim Jordan, chief fund-raiser Peter Maroney, scheduler Kaaren Hinck, communications director Chris Lehane, media consultants Jim Margolis and Michael Donilon, Boston political consultants Chuck Campion, John Marttila, and Michael Whouley, and Cameron Kerry, a Boston lawyer who is the senator's brother.

Kerry raised almost exactly $6 million in the last three months and had $11 million cash on hand June 30, aides said.

That cash balance is more than the $9.4 million and $6 million that Democrats Al Gore and Bill Bradley had, respectively, at this point in the 2000 Democratic campaign.

Kerry aides say that because of President Bush's fund-raising prowess and because of their candidate's steadiness in building his campaign, they have a better chance than Dean of emerging not only as the Democratic nominee, but also the most credible challenger to the Republican incumbent.

Dean first captured public attention by opposing the war in Iraq.

He has displayed a pugnacious style on the campaign trail, criticizing not only the president, but also his rivals for the Democratic nomination, accusing them of being too timid or having abandoned core party principles.

That style has generated an emotional reaction, especially among party activists, but the Kerry campaign thinks that group is not representative of all Democratic constituencies, or the moderate voters needed to win a general election.

''Everybody screams when they come down the water slide, but then you hit the bottom and the quick thrill is gone,'' said Margolis, Kerry's media consultant. ''This is serious business -- who runs the country -- and we're working hard to build a campaign that's thoughtful and energetic and can win beyond the amusement park gate.''
